What are birthmarks?

Birthmarks are pigmented areas of the skin that differ from the surrounding tissues. They are common and not typically a cause for concern. Birthmarks vary in shape, size, and color. 

Many are present at birth. Some fade as a child gets older, while others remain for life unless removed by a dermatologist. 

Some birthmarks can become cancerous, particularly those that change in appearance. 

What do birthmarks look like?

Birthmarks vary widely in the way they look. They might be red, pink, brown, tan, blue, purple, or black. They may appear flat or as raised marks. Birthmarks range in size from a pinhead to the size of a fist. They can change in size or color over time, especially due to hormonal changes or sun exposure. Birthmarks are sometimes itchy.

What are the risk factors for birthmarks?

Anyone can develop a birthmark, and the cause isn’t known. They may be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Some forms of birthmarks are more common in children with a family history of birthmarks. However, there’s no way to prevent them.
